Queens of the City: An Essay on Feminism and the Love of Rap is the result of a sociological survey of female rap fans. The objective: to explore the many feminist issues surrounding the world of Quebec hip-hop. Through conversations with women, Zénaïde Berg raises a complex question: how to be a feminist and love rap? Beginning with a brief history of the place of women in the Quebec rap scene, the author demonstrates that the practice of amateurism unfolds in a specific way among women. For them, rap is a source of empowerment, a way to externalize their emotions, a way to connect with others and to develop a critical reflection on the power relations of gender, race, and class. Zénaïde Berg's research is complemented by current global reflections on the waves of denunciations of the #MeToo movement.
