"Nico's compositions seem like refrains, like those eternal tunes that haunt us, recognized before being known. Their infinite repetitions and variations haunt our minds, their nuances blur the lines between dreams and memories. "I have the feeling that my music sounds prehistoric," Nico suggests: indeed, can we not hear, in it, the matrixial pulsation of the waves, the slow dance of the moon, the auroral song of the birds, the sigh of the splitting glaciers, the subterranean labor of the earth's crust, the quiet rise of the trees, the tireless breath of the wind, the absolute reign of the night?"

The fourth album by Nico, a former Warhol superstar and briefly associated with the Velvet Underground, precedes a long hiatus; it is the end of a cycle for the German-born singer, a repeated homage to her friend Jim Morrison of the Doors. It is John Cale, a multi-instrumentalist and virtuoso, possessing a solid classical training, who is responsible for fixing the undulating course of Nico's songs on tape, and it is with these that the Welshman truly experiences the work of an arranger.
